The Therm-a-Rest Trail Lite Mattress Pad is a must-have for a good nights rest on the trail. The Trail Lite series is also available in a Women’s version with more padding around the feet and torso.
What We like:
First, it’s comfortable which is obviously the reason you’d take a mattress with you. There is nothing worse than trying to fall asleep with stones digging into your body. Also, it takes seconds to inflate (without causing you a massive headache) and seconds to deflate. Compared to the REI brand mattress pads, these are slimmer and pack down smaller which is a bonus if you’re packing one in the kayak. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a nice accessory that packs down quite small. It’s better than rolling a bunch of clothes for a pillow and is really comfortable. The Trail Lite Stuff Sack is sold separately (EDIT: In 2011, it appears as though they are including stuff sacks with the purchase of a mattress pad) and isn’t a must-have but it’s good to keep your mattress in nice condition and it helps keep it packed at a small size.
The Final Word:
Don’t leave home without a Therm-a-rest. Your back will never forgive you otherwise.
