Book: Paddling Illinois

Paddling IllinoisEverything you’ve come to expect from the Paddling series is here. We couldn’t live without Paddling Northern Wisconsin or Paddling Southern Wisconsin by Mike Svob. But being in Madison, we’re close to our neighbors from the south and sometimes we’ll actually pay tolls to paddle there.

What We Like:
This time, Mike Svob explores Illinois with 64 trips on 33 rivers. Every trip is broken down with a description of the expertise level, put-ins and take-outs, what to take expect on the paddle, camping information and best of all, detailed maps.

The book is well organized and gives you basic paddling information (Class definitions, terminology, etc.) at the beginning. Then it breaks down rivers into manageable or accessible “trips” with mileage information.

The Final Word:
Paddling Illinois is an excellent resource for paddlers of all levels. The rivers you’ll find in Illinois are very much on par with what you’ll find in Wisconsin aside from the canals mapped out here (Illinois, Michigan & Hennepin) which probably make for an interesting paddle.
